The focus for the Science Department this year will be on the use of learner-centric inquiry and investigative approach in teaching.

Key Programmes

At the pupils level, opportunities will be provided for them to learn through investigative project work (Sec 2) , mini-research projects (Sec 3). The Sec 1 will attend a Science camp where they will learn about practical skills, use of data loggers and science report writing. They will also have opportunities to have hands on learning through the Life Science workshops on areas like DNA, genetics, Tissue culture, microbes and parasites.

Collaboration

The department will also be collaborating with NIE lecturers in facilitating teachers in a more learner -centric teaching approach. In the area of life science, the biology teachers are collaborating with also an NIE lecturer in the use of specific life science packages for teaching.

Differentiated Approach

The department has a range of programmes to adequately challenge the science students. For example, selected Sec 2 pupils will take part in the Scientific Thinking Programme at cluster level where they will undergo training in scientific research methodology and will undertake a project in Semester 1 at competition level. Another groups of Sec 3 pupils will undergo a Bioinformatics Training programme and the Research Foundation programme. Other pupils will be participating in the Australian Science quiz. Project work will also be differentiated in terms of ability level among pupils. Remedial lessons are also differentiated in terms of pupils' needs where the remedial sessions will be structured in a seminar style in which pupils will sign up.
