Welcome History School Song School Building Project IV Our Team

Fairfield was started in 1888 by the faith of one lady - Miss Sophia Blackmore, a woman missionary from Australia. Our School began as a one-room school in Cross Street with just 8 nonya girls. It was unheard of in those early days of Singapore for girls to have an education. Education for girls was definitely not favoured by the early traditional Chinese immigrants. Girls were just to be married off and to become mothers, housewives and good daughters-in-law. In spite of the indifference and even suspicion from parents, Miss Sophia Blackmore persevered in her vision for a girls' school. The Telok Ayer Girls' School was founded in August of that year. The dreams of our founder and the early principals and teachers to provide an education for girls were further fulfilled, when more and more girls enrolled in the school.

In 1912, a new school building was constructed on a site provided by the Government at 178 Neil Road. For the first time in its history, the school had a building of its own. This was made possible by the foresight of Miss Mary Olson, the Principal and the generous donation of $5000 from Mr Fairfield, an American. Our School which was originally named Telok Ayer Girls School was then changed to Fairfield Girls' School after Mr Fairfield without whose generous financial support the progress of the School would have lost momentum. The baton was then passed to the first Asian Principal - the late Mrs Lim Bock Kee in 1946.

In 1958, the name of the School was changed to Fairfield Methodist Girls' School. In 1959, when Mrs Lim Bock Kee retired, Miss Lim Geok Kheng, a teacher and an old girl of the school, succeeded her. To Miss Lim Geok Kheng who has given more than 37 years of service to the School and who was the Principal from 1960 to 1982, we must mention a special word of thanks. Under her Principalship, the School expanded rapidly and all too soon, we realised that our physical facilities in Neil Road, in spite of all our building extensions and renovations were found to be inadequate and substandard. Relocation was therefore the answer. The School is deeply appreciative of the immense contributions made by Miss Lim to the strong growth of Fairfield in her 23 years of dedicated Principalship.

As Chairperson of the Fairfield Methodist School Building project Committee, she played a primary role in the success of our School's relocation to the Dover Road site in 1983. 1983 thus began a new era in the history of Fairfield. With our relocation in 1983, Fairfield has the distinction of being the first Methodist School in Singapore to become co-educational, thus breaking away from our 94-year old tradition of an all girls school.

Also, no longer are we one school but two - Fairfield Methodist Primary School and Fairfield Methodist Secondary School - each with its own separate administration but under the same Fairfield Methodist School Board of Management. Miss Cheong Yuen Lin and Mrs Tang Poh Kim, both old girls of Fairfield, became Principals of FMPS and FMSS respectively.

OUR NEW SCHOOL AT DOVER ROAD
In 1990, Fairfield embarked on a second Building Project (1990 - 1994) to build a new Extension Block and upgrade existing facilities to enable the Secondary School to go single session in 1995. In our new School, we have 5 blocks of buildings: a Classroom Block with 36 classrooms, an Administration Block with 2 Computer Rooms, a Library, a Band Room and ECA Rooms, a Technical Workshop Block, a multi-purpose Auditorium and Canteen Block, a Science Block with 5 Science Laboratories, 4 Home Economic Rooms, 2 Art Rooms, a Music & Drama Room and an AVA Room. We also have our own Air Rifle Range, a Basketball cum Volleyball Court, ample parking space and a green open field for sports and games. In 1996, Fairfield became Autonomous.
