Interview With Mdm Susan Lim

Mdm Lim is the mother of two lovely and cute daughters. She is the form teacher of Secondary 1A. As an Art teacher, she tries to teach students not only to draw and paint but to help them see with their intelligence and keen perception that a yellow spot is not just a yellow spot - it can be transformed into the sun.

Journalist: Mdm Lim, how long have you taught in Fairfield?
Mdm Lim: I think it has been three and a half to four years already.
Journalist: You are the art teacher in the school. Did you receive special training in art here in Singapore or overseas?
Mdm Lim: I took "A" Level Art in Singapore and graduated from the Oregan State University in the United States.
Journalist: What kind of training did you specialize in?
Mdm Lim: I specialize in graphic design, but the University also trained us in every aspect of art, for example, the Fine Arts.
Journalist: Recently one of your art students bagged a SYF Gold Award. Who was this student and what art piece did she submit that merited this award?
Mdm Lim: The student is Eunice Chan and she submitted a batik painting entitled: "Celebration". It depicts the triumphant entrance of those who are able to persevere and eventually soar and reach their goals in their life. She used sea creatures and showed the dangers that they face in the ocean and how they eventually survive and rejoice over it. The painting features a jaw of a big fish and it represents the difficulties and the dangers that the fishes will encounter.
Journalist: How did you feel about this achievement?
Mdm Lim: I felt happy for Eunice and personally, however, I feel that this is more of a personal achievement. Eunice put in a lot of effort and I am glad that she was also able to persevere to complete the piece, so I’m happy for the both of us and I am hoping that we will see more of this.
Journalist:

I’m sure this award must have taken weeks of hard work for you and the student. Could you share with us some contributing factors to this success?

Mdm Lim:

Actually, this piece did not only take weeks but months to complete. The piece was actually her "O" Level piece and she actually did it twice, not just in the final process of doing the batik but even in the planning process as the piece was quite weak initially. That is why, I believe that she is able to soar to new heights. Her success is also due to her commitment, her initiative to do researching herself, and her ability to apply what she has learnt.

Journalist:

Do you have higher expectations of students doing Art as a subject in the ‘O’ Level now?

Mdm Lim: No, I always have high expectations of all my students, whether they are from the Upper or Lower Secondary.
Journalist:

What are your future plans for the Art Club?

Mdm Lim: The Art Cub is planning to see more achievements, and I am hoping that the students would display more creativity, more independence in decision making, and more enthusiasm. I also hope that it would be a place where students really appreciate art, not treating it as a subject to be stressed, but as an avenue to appreciate things of beauty and for the enjoyment of art.
Journalist: Could you give the students some advice on how they can do better or excel in Art?
Mdm Lim: I think that students must be committed, interested, hardworking, and have the initiative to follow up on the instructions given to them. They should also read up on their own so as to be able to expose themselves visually, as well as mentally. Lastly, practise, as it perfects things.
