“Every calling is great when greatly pursued.
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling
of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14”
- Mr Wee Tat Chuen
You have seen him - immaculately dressed in a long-sleeved
shirt, cruising on his bicycle, equipped with a knapsack on
his back and ever ready to start the school day.
Those of us who know him and especially his students can
strongly attest to his passion for teaching. Blessed with
a great sense of humour (such that at times, nobody knows
for certain whether what he says is to be taken seriously
or in jest) and always magnanimous towards those around him,
he is also very much a man after God’s heart. And yes,
having had such a great impact on so many, especially those
in the Student’s Council and the Boy’s Brigade,
a student councillor recalls a witty quotation of Mr Wee…
“These are the years in which a man changes to become
the man he will always be.”
The Journalism Team had the privilege to find out more about
the ex-Fairsian and former teacher via email.
| Q: |
Mr Wee, how long have you
been teaching in Fairfield? Is there anyone, in particular,
who has impacted your life and how so? |
| A: |
I have been teaching for
about six and a half years. Quite a few have impacted
me actually. But if I have to single one out,
I would say it has been Miss Yeo Li Li who was my Math
HOD in my beginning years as a teacher. It was a wonderful
combination of her professionalism in guiding me and her
friendship as a sister-in-Christ that added up to make
the impact. More than anything else, it's her love and
obedience to God that has been an example to me. |
| Q: |
Did you accomplish what you
set out to do in the beginning when you started teaching? |
| A: |
I don't think as teachers
we will ever reach that state of accomplishment because
there is always so much more to be accomplished. I can
only say that I have been blessed to have been able to
touch some lives and be of help to some of the students
I have taught. It has been a joy to see the students grow
in the Lord, especially. |
| Q: |
What has been the most enriching
experience for you in Fairfield? |
| A: |
Again, there have been many.
I think my times with The Boys' Brigade, Students' Council
and Form Classes count as most enriching. It’s really
those moments when you have witnessed growth and positive
change in the students that re-affirm the value of the
work we do as teachers. |
| Q: |
Why did you have to leave
the school? |
| A: |
I won't say I had to leave.
It was a choice to ensure that I keep growing as an educator.
Moving out of Fairfield ensured that I broaden my perspectives
of education and school leadership. This is an excellent
time to reflect and learn more about who I am and the
journey ahead I want to take. More importantly, this will
provide space and time for me to seek God’s will
for me in the years ahead. |
| Q: |
What is it that you miss
most about Fairfield? |
| A: |
The Fairsians! |
| Q: |
You have led the Student
Council over many years. Is there anything
you wish to advise the current as well as future student
leaders of the school? |
| A: |
It is a great opportunity
to learn and to serve. As far as possible, cherish the
opportunity, stretch yourself to grow and to give. Truly,
it is more blessed to give than to receive. Be willing
and daring to dream BIG dreams, it’s really up
to you to decide how much of an influence you want to
make for the school. |
| Q: |
Finally, do you have
any other advice which you wish to give to Fairsians
in general? |
| A: |
Yes, tell them that the
answer to life is in Jeremiah 9: 23,24. This is what
the Lord says:
Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom
Or the strong man boast of his strength
Or the rich man boast of his riches.
But let him who boasts boast about this:
That He understands and knows me
That I am the Lord, who exercises
Kindness, justice and righteousness on earth
For in these I delight.
